Macros in Topocad

In December Chaos systems AB will release its new module for macros in Topocad. “To use macros helps the user to create right kind of data, in the right layer and with the right information in a faster and safer way” says Tomas Sandström, partner and sales manager at Chaos systems AB.

In the macro module the user can simply create his or her own compound commandos from a few different initial varieties.  You can for example choose to create a line and it will place itself directly in the right layer, with the right colour, line type and line width. You can also choose if you want it to be closed and filled, begin on a chosen point number and if you want it to have codes and attributes. It is also possible to create different lines, points, symbols and text, and copy and make changes on existing objects.

Several different menus can be created and you can alternate between them directly in the macro toolbox. Macros are saved in an XML-file that can be shared with others by placing it on the network with access from others. You can also copy and send the file to others in an e-mail.
Macron can be used by all Topocad users who have Topocad Engineer and Topocad Base module.

Release of Topocad 12

On December 7, 2009, Chaos Systems AB releases version 12 of Topocad, a CAD system for survey, design and mapping. Topocad is a stand-alone CAD application with approx 17 000 users’ world-wide.

Version 12 contains some new features, for example an enhanced Edit propertiesfunction  which now has a filter and a larger and a more distinct dialog. All information is shown and can be printed directly into the drawing. A brand new function in Topocad is Associative dimensioning where the dimensioning comes along when the object is edited.

Tomas Sandström, partner and sales manager at Chaos systems AB tells about the section templates that are now handled differently: “We are now working with the complete cross section as one. This gives us a better way to handle outer slopes and drainage ditches inside the theoretic cross section. It is also possible to edit all points in the cross section in the well known “Topocad” way, by editing and interpolation between any number of cross sections with interactive calculation of all volumes.”

Another new feature is support for DGN from Microstation. A function that saves time for the users is Copy and Paste, which you can do directly from one drawing to another. In Topocad 12 you also handle system files differently; you save them in XML-files and they can be saved as one file, easier for everyone to handle and to send to other users.

New features in the civil planning module
Last spring Topocad Civil planning module was released and we noticed a fast growing demand for the module. It offers several new features, for example regarding the drawing of areas and lines that can now be set separately. It makes it possible to place an area under another area, with its lines showing above the smaller area. This is used when lines defined by use borders on lines defined by features. Another new feature is that the Legend can be put directly in the template which makes it faster and easier to build up finished drawings  with, for example, all the including features. In Topocad 12 polygons can use background colors, that is to say they have three colors: One for border, one for filling and one for background. This makes it easier to handle areas with dotted and circled land.

More new features in Topocad 12

Generally

  • The system files (symbols, line types, code table and attribute) can now be saved and used as XML-files and also as a collected XML-file. It makes it easier for you to see what they contain. It also makes it easier to distribute data between different users.
  • New document uses templates – you can choose among different templates. It is used for drawings and section templates.

CAD

  • Copy a whole drawing, or parts of it, and paste it directly in another drawing.
  •  You can copy attribute values to other objects.
  •  Snap of centre of gravity on the object.
  • Associative dimensioning: the measurement knows when the object is edited.

Sectioning and machine control

  • Direct writing to the MBS-format to Georog.
  • New way to handle the section template and sections; outer slopes are built into the template and this makes it possible to handle the otherwise tricky drainage trench that is located under the centre of the trench or in its proximity.
  • Terrain sections can be created directly from more than two terrain models.

Import and export

  • DWG version 2010 import and export.
  • Choose how you want heights to be exported when exporting to DWG.
  • You can open and save DWG without using import
  • You can switch on and switch off layers in external references.
  • Import and export of TIT- and NYL-files.
  • You can export clothoids (a dividing up into radii)

Survey data

  • Active Sync is built-in.
  • You can use double PP-files.
  • A built-in support for Trimble Jobxml format.
  • Communication toward Topcon and Topsurv is built-in.
  • Better support for handling GPS-transformations.

3D view

  • Can handle text.
  • Gives you the possibility to move the center point.
  • Offers a larger possibility for selection in 3D.

Macro Module

  • Topocad releases a new module for macros, you define your macros yourself and can use them as complex functions in Topocad.

Release of Topocad open source database connection

When releasing Topocad 11.3 June 26, 2009, Chaos systems AB presents a new and open source database connection, which connect to a large number of databases. It uses the open source FDO from Open Source GEO, which has been adapted to Topocad. Many customers have expressed a demanded of a freestanding database. On account of this, Topocad has three different solutions of database connections, where this FDO connection can collect and store data from a large number of different databases.

FDO database connection becomes a separate module to Topocad, and makes it possible to access data from several different geospatial data sources in the state of geospatial databases and file formats. FDO uses a model based on database connections, where each connection supports a certain format or data source.

 Following database connections are used:

  • MySQL
  • PostGIS
  • Oracle (Oracle 10g, express, and 9i)
  • MS SQL Server Spatial
  • ESRI ArcSDE
  • SDF (Autodesk’s geospatial file format)
  • ESRI SHP
  • ODBC
  • WFS
  • WMS
  • GDAL (Geospatial Data Abstraction Library) (Raster)
  • OGR (Vector format: shp, gml, dgn, kml, mapinfo etc.)
  • SQLite

“FDO means an increased accessibility to different databases, many of them free and Open Source, and it offers our customers a very cost-efficient and simple solution for collecting, update and store data in different formats” says Tomas Sandström, partner and sales manager of Chaos systems AB.
“Topocad aims to be a program easy to handle, and we have focused on creating simple functions for mapping in different databases, and where we simply states how the different types of object should be displayed in the maps. All this with a user-friendly administration tool for the maps” continues Tomas Sandström.

About Feature Data Object (FDO)
Three years ago, Autodesk released the FDO-technology, a platform for mapping by open source that gives opportunities to coordinate different types of data. FDO is available within Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo) and makes it possible for programmers all around the world to contribute to a new mapping technology.

About Topocad
Topocad is developed by Chaos systems AB and is a CAD-program for mapping, survey and projecting. The program has 15 000 users in slightly more than 80 countries, and is translated into 18 languages.

Chaos systems releases the Topocad plan module

Plan moduleTopocad:s new module for planning has functions to create intelligent objects through compound commands, functions to allot features on areas, all according to the country standard, and self defined features. Further, it also has a smart function to outline all this in a legend on the drawing sheet.

A brand new function is that you can create a toolbox yourself, says Tomas Sandström, partner and sales manager at Chaos systems. That way, you get direct access to compound commands. Commands that can be constructed are function calls, such as create a point, create a line, create a symbol, change to or copy to, and after that give a number of features to the object that is created. The features differ depending on the type of object, but as an example, for a line you can specify layer, color of layer, group of layer, type of line, line width, line color, pattern, closed line, point number, code and attribute. All these features are placed on the object at a direct command. No other editing is necessary. This function can be used for many different types of commands. As they are divided up on different menus, you can quickly choose a menu for for example a detail plan, plan designing or basic map.

The plan directions that are to be given to different objects in the detail plan are fetched from the model created from the local direction and are marked directly on the objects. Accordingly, the objects know what they are and the features are automatically typed and numbered in numerical order after earlier features on other objects. They are also marked directly on the object as attributes and are therefore easy to save directly in the database. The features are always saved in the drawing.

It is easy to edit the features you collect from the model, and they know they are altered in comparison with similar features, which will create a new numbering. It is easy, as well, to transfer locally made features back to the model.

To create a key with the plan directions the original Legend-command is used, which now is supplemented with plan directions. These features are automatically put directly in the key. When you remove a feature from the map it is also automatically removed from the key, and vice versa. A symbol library is created to handle the directions and you have the possibility to use different types of symbols in the drawing as well as in the key.

In version 11 of Topocad:s base package are a few commandos that are applicable to create plans, among other things, the automatic and manual adjustment of text that is “cut off” in the drawing frame. Each view can use different storage collections in order to fast create for example a basic map and an illustration in one and the same drawing.

Chaos systems AB releases Topocad 11

December 19 did Chaos systems AB release its eleventh version of Topocad, the CAD software for surveying, mapping and design.

Topocads development cycle is very steady and continuous. Every Christmas time there are a new version, a new version number that contains the big changes that requires new file formats. So even 2008 and December 19 was the date said and also the truth for the new release.

Topocad have thousands of users in a wide spread all over the world, and many different thinking and wanting comes from many of the users. This is a foundation for the development and many of the users demands are put into new releases.

For version 11 three areas have been in focus: Administration, CAD/mapping/layout and Volume calculation.

"The CAD/mapping part involves all users and is important for us because it concerns our next step to make Topocad more involved in the mapping and planning process especially in local authorities. We plan to release a new module within this field during 2009 and it is a good step for us to improve features such as layout and drawing sheet management, automatic scale bars and North arrows, automatic fix of cutted texts in drawing views and things that enhance the speed to create nice drawings and maps which still is very important for most of our users", says Tomas Sandström, sales manager and one of the partners of Chaos systems AB.

"When it comes to the administrative part Topocad 11 has a new interface with more buttons, a check for corrupt files, a logging function for each command in the files where you also can create your own notes, and functions for better handling of system files as attribute tables and line type files".

"Our users works with many different file formats, from simple coordinate files, to CAD drawing files and GIS tool files and also different types of databases, it has been easy to import and export many different file types but now it is also possible to use these files as external references directly, no translation or transformation is needed, Topocad reads the files direct and you can mix file types as DWG, DGN, Shape, MIF, XYZ, LandXML, MX genio and many more. If they have different insertion points or rotations this is also made directly in the settings for the external references. And for the file formats that uses layers we can turn different layers on and off, also important to have the best graphic view for work and for output", continues Tomas Sandström.

"In version 10 and during version 10 many new features was released for the cross sectioning calculation and especially for the output from the cross sections to LandXML files and digital terrain models. It is hard to make much more concerning design and volume calculations but a couple of things are released in version 11 and one of them is use of many different digital terrain models in the cross section calculation and the other is a completely new calculation of volume using an excavation bottomand comparing this towards two digital terrain models just entering the slopes towards them in excavation and/or fill (bank). It is a very fast way to handle complex calculations and excavations for houses, road bodies, parking lots and other surfaces", continues Tomas Sandström.

This is part of all new commands and improvements that has been developed in Topocad 11, read more and download from www.chaos.se
